We
had a good turnout for this one. Seven of us met to explore
the Bowl of Fire, a Red Rock Canyon look-alike near Lake Mead.
Everywhere we looked, the fiery red sandstone cliffs appeared to have been
eaten away by rock worms. Some of the holes
were larger than the phone booths that we used to
stuff on our youth.
The
holes were sometimes grouped into grotesque
shapes which we photographed from every conceivable
angle. At one point someone said that the most unusual thing about a formation
was that no one was taking a picture of it. Holes were often eroded all the
way through to form windows. This, of course, gave
us an opportunity to herd everyone inside so
that someone outside could snap a photo through the opening. We considered
the area scenic enough that BobnPaty posed for a new business
card photo.
The
camera caught Guy in the process of asking for
directions. Presumably Marg simply reiterated the hikers creed "When
in doubt, go up hill". There were a lot of
routes up hill to the top and we could (generally) find a way around every
obstacle. Some of our more delicate female hikers,
however, managed to find a challenging way up.
And when we reached the top, we were rewarded with
a magnificent view of the lake on another great
hike.
