The Fort was built in 1836 as a trading post to supply Indians and fur trappers and later converted to a military post to protect travelers on the Oregon trail. It remained active through the 1870's protecting and supplying miners who got off the train to Cheyenne Wyoming to follow a dangerous trail through hostile Indian country to gold fields in the Black Hills.
